LED Solar Simulators: A Game-Changer for Photocatalytic Activity Testing

Release time:

Mar 06,2026

Photocatalysis technology, a core direction in the fields of green energy conversion and environmental governance, boasts broad industrialization prospects in hydrogen production, CO₂ reduction, organic pollutant degradation and other scenarios. The essence of photocatalytic reactions is a process where photons excite materials to generate carriers, which in turn drive redox reactions. Therefore, the performance of light sources directly determines the accuracy, repeatability and comparability of test data for photocatalytic activity. Traditional light sources such as high-pressure mercury lamps and xenon lamps suffer from defects like poor spectral matching, unstable irradiation and severe thermal radiation interference, making them unable to meet the refined research and development needs of modern photocatalytic materials. Relying on technical advantages including high spectral tunability, stable operation and low thermal output, LED solar simulators have gradually become core equipment for photocatalytic activity testing, providing standardized light environment support for the entire process of material research and development from laboratory small-scale tests to industrial pilot tests.

I. Core Technical Characteristics of LED Solar Simulators

The core requirements of photocatalytic activity testing for light sources focus on three dimensions: spectral matching, irradiation stability and thermal interference control. LED solar simulators accurately meet these three major demands through technological innovation.

(1) Precise Spectral Reproduction and Customization Capability

Based on multi-chip integration and spectral calibration technology, LED solar simulators can accurately reproduce the AM1.5G standard spectrum (1000W/㎡), an internationally accepted standard for simulating terrestrial solar radiation that covers the ultraviolet to near-infrared band of 300-1200nm with a spectral matching error of ≤1%, complying with the requirements of IEC international standards. Meanwhile, they support personalized spectral customization and can flexibly adjust the irradiation intensity of specific bands according to the absorption characteristics of different photocatalytic materials. For example, they can enhance the output of the 300-400nm band for UV-responsive TiO₂ materials and optimize the distribution of the 400-760nm band for visible-light-responsive g-C₃N₄ materials, achieving precise adaptation between the light source and the absorption spectrum of materials.

(2) Excellent Irradiation Stability and Longevity

The inherent characteristics of LED light sources endow them with far superior operational stability compared with traditional light sources. Their service life can reach more than 20,000 hours, the fluctuation of irradiation intensity is ≤0.5% within 20 minutes of continuous operation, and the irradiation uniformity in the effective area of 45cm×45cm is only 1.8% in long-term tests. Such high stability not only ensures the comparability of test data between different batches and laboratories but also reduces the frequency of equipment maintenance and usage costs, providing a reliable guarantee for long-term continuous testing.

(3) Low Thermal Conductivity Design Reduces Reaction Interference

Photocatalytic reactions are temperature-sensitive. Traditional xenon lamps generate a large amount of thermal radiation during operation, leading to a rise in the temperature of the reaction system and thus interfering with the authenticity of catalytic activity evaluation. Through optimizing the heat dissipation structure and light source packaging technology, LED solar simulators control the surface temperature of the light-emitting surface below 30℃, and their thermal radiation is only 1/5 that of traditional xenon lamps. This effectively avoids the impact of temperature rise on carrier recombination rate and reaction equilibrium, ensuring that test data can truly reflect the intrinsic photocatalytic activity of materials.

II. Key Application Scenarios of LED Solar Simulators in Photocatalytic Testing

By virtue of their core technical advantages, LED solar simulators have been deeply integrated into the entire process of photocatalytic material research and development, playing an irreplaceable role in key links such as performance evaluation, material screening, stability testing and mechanism analysis.

(1) Standardized Testing of Photocatalytic Hydrogen/Oxygen Production Performance

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen production is an important way to convert solar energy into chemical energy, and its activity testing needs to be based on a unified standard spectrum to ensure the scientificity of data. LED solar simulators can accurately output the AM1.5G standard spectrum and simulate solar radiation environments under different latitudes and illumination conditions by adjusting the irradiation angle and intensity. In the testing of hydrogen production catalysts such as TiO₂-based and CdS-based catalysts, core indicators such as hydrogen production rate and quantum efficiency can be accurately measured by fixing spectral parameters; by outputting ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared bands in sections, the utilization efficiency of materials for photons of different wavelengths can also be quantified, providing data support for modification research such as the optimization of catalyst energy band structure and the loading of cocatalysts.

(2) Efficient Screening and Modification Guidance of Visible-Light Responsive Materials

The development of visible-light responsive photocatalytic materials is the key to improving solar energy utilization efficiency. Bismuth-based (BiOBr, Bi₂WO₆), g-C₃N₄-based, black phosphorus-based and other materials have become research hotspots, and their activity is directly related to the spectral response range. LED solar simulators can subdivide the visible light region (400-760nm) into bands such as blue light (400-500nm), green light (500-600nm) and red light (600-760nm) to realize sectional irradiation testing. In the screening of BiOBr/Bi₂WO₆ composite catalysts, the optimal response band of the material can be determined by comparing the degradation rate of Rhodamine B under different bands; if the degradation rate under blue light is significantly higher than that under green light, the band gap can be narrowed by doping rare earth elements such as Y³⁺ and La³⁺ to expand the green light response range and improve the full-spectrum utilization efficiency.

(3) Stringent Evaluation of the Long-Term Stability of Photocatalytic Materials

Long-term stability is a core bottleneck for the industrialization of photocatalytic materials, which needs to be evaluated under stringent conditions simulating the natural environment. LED solar simulators can achieve continuous and stable irradiation for hundreds of hours, and can accurately control parameters such as temperature and humidity in combination with environmental chambers to simulate complex outdoor climatic conditions. In the testing of perovskite photocatalytic materials (e.g., CsPbBr), under the conditions of 1000W/㎡ irradiation intensity and 50% relative humidity with continuous illumination for 200 hours, the photo-corrosion resistance of the material is evaluated by monitoring the attenuation of oxygen production rate; if the attenuation rate is controlled within 15%, the material has good stability; if the attenuation rate exceeds 30%, the stability needs to be optimized through surface coating with Al₂O₃ and SiO₂ or heterojunction construction.

(4) In-Situ Analysis of the Microscopic Mechanism of Photocatalytic Reactions

Revealing the microscopic mechanism of reactions is the core premise of catalyst structure design, which requires the synchronous implementation of "illumination-characterization". LED solar simulators can be combined with in-situ transient photocurrent meters, electrochemical impedance spectrometers, online mass spectrometers and other equipment to build a multi-dimensional testing platform. In the research of Sb₂S₃@CdSexS1-x heterojunction catalysts, carriers are accurately excited by a 50μs pulsed light source, and combined with in-situ transient photocurrent testing, it is found that the S-scheme heterojunction structure can increase the carrier separation efficiency by 3 times; when combined with an online mass spectrometer, the signals of intermediate products such as HCOO⁻, CH₄ and CO during the CO₂ reduction process can be captured in real time, clarifying the reaction pathway of "CO₂→HCOO⁻→CH₄", and providing a theoretical basis for heterojunction interface regulation and active site design.

III. Technological Development Trends and Industrial Value

With the advancement of photocatalysis technology towards high efficiency and practicality, LED solar simulators are developing in the directions of spectral precision, intelligent control and diversified application scenarios. In the future, the real-time dynamic optimization of spectral parameters can be realized by introducing AI spectral calibration technology; an intelligent testing system with multi-equipment collaboration can be constructed by combining the Internet of Things technology to improve testing efficiency; in product design, the irradiation area and band coverage will be further expanded to adapt to the industrial-level testing needs of photovoltaic-photocatalysis coupling systems, large-scale pollutant degradation devices and other equipment.

By solving the technical pain points of traditional light sources, LED solar simulators provide a standardized and highly reliable light environment solution for photocatalytic activity testing. Their application not only accelerates the research and development process of high-efficiency photocatalytic materials but also promotes the standardization and unification of photocatalytic testing methods. Guided by the "dual carbon" goals, LED solar simulators will continue to support the large-scale application of photocatalysis technology in the fields of green hydrogen production, CO₂ resource utilization, industrial wastewater treatment and so on, providing core technical support for energy structure transformation and ecological environmental governance.

Technical Advantages of LED

Spectral Matching

Accurately reproduce AM1.5G standard spectrum (300-1200nm) with a matching error of ≤1% (IEC standard); support customization of UV-visible-near-infrared bands

Covers a wide band, but the AM1.5G spectral matching error is usually 5%-10%, requiring frequent filter replacement for calibration

Mainly emits UV bands (254nm, 365nm), lacking visible and near-infrared bands, unable to simulate the full solar spectrum

LED has far higher spectral matching accuracy than traditional light sources, without the need for frequent adjustment relying on filters; it can be precisely adapted to the absorption characteristics of different photocatalytic materials, avoiding activity test deviations caused by poor spectral matching

Irradiation Stability

Fluctuation ≤0.5% within 20 minutes of continuous operation (Class A+); irradiation inhomogeneity of only 1.8% in 45cm×45cm area (Class A); service life over 20,000 hours

Fluctuation ≥3% within 20 minutes of continuous operation; regional inhomogeneity usually 5%-8%; service life about 500-1000 hours

Irradiation intensity decays rapidly with service time (5%-10% per week); regional inhomogeneity ≥10%; service life about 1000-2000 hours

LED has significantly better irradiation stability and longevity than traditional light sources, ensuring the repeatability and comparability of multi-batch and long-term test data, and reducing equipment replacement and maintenance costs

Thermal Radiation Interference

Surface temperature of light-emitting surface <30℃; thermal radiation is only 1/5 that of xenon lamps, no additional temperature interference

Surface temperature of light-emitting surface ≥80℃ during operation with strong thermal radiation, requiring additional cooling systems (e.g., circulating water)

Surface temperature of light-emitting surface ≥100℃ with extremely strong thermal radiation, easily causing local overheating of the reaction system

The low thermal characteristic of LED can effectively avoid the temperature rise of the reaction system caused by thermal radiation of traditional light sources, prevent abnormal carrier recombination rate and reaction equilibrium shift, and ensure that test data truly reflect the intrinsic photocatalytic activity of materials

Band Adjustment Capability

Support sectional adjustment (e.g., UV 300-400nm, blue light 400-500nm, etc.), and can accurately control the irradiation intensity of a single band

Band selection requires replacement of specific filters with poor adjustment flexibility and inability to accurately control the intensity of a single band

Only able to output fixed UV characteristic bands, with no adjustment capability for visible and near-infrared bands

LED can customize the light environment of specific bands on demand, meeting the refined testing needs such as screening of visible-light responsive materials and analysis of photon utilization efficiency in different bands, which cannot be achieved by traditional light sources

Energy Consumption and Safety

Low energy consumption (only 1/3 of xenon lamps), no mercury pollution, and no explosion risk during operation

High energy consumption, some xenon lamps contain mercury components, and there is a risk of tube explosion during long-term high-temperature operation

High energy consumption, containing mercury components (hazardous substances), and high-temperature operation is prone to tube rupture leading to mercury leakage

LED is more in line with the needs of green and low-carbon testing without toxic substances and potential safety hazards; traditional light sources have mercury pollution and safety risks, and higher energy consumption costs

Coupling Compatibility

Can be directly combined with in-situ transient photocurrent meters, online mass spectrometers and other equipment without additional cooling system adaptation

Cooling system must be connected first when coupling to avoid high temperature affecting the accuracy of coupled equipment, with complex adaptation process

High temperature and mercury pollution are easy to damage coupled equipment, basically unable to achieve high-precision in-situ test coupling

LED simplifies the coupling process with high-end characterization equipment and can build a synchronous "illumination-characterization" testing system; traditional light sources are difficult to meet the needs of in-situ mechanism analysis due to high temperature and pollution problems
